Gas_26 / North Macedonia - Kosovo* Interconnector
Brief project description
The project consists of a gas interconnector between the gas transmission systems of North Macedonia and Kosovo*, in two distinct parts that are going to be built and operated by the respective TSOs.
The project would allow:
- Competitiveness of natural gas market
- Connecting of North Macedonia and Kosovo* with the region (market integration) which would lead to economic, financial and social benefit.
- Development of the region in terms of using the natural gas as energy source as well as security of energy supply in the economic development of the region
- Higher level of energy supply for achieving economic and social benefits
- Advancement and protection of the environment with higher utilization of natural gas as ecologically clean fuel, etc.
- The project enables to NER JSC in MK to increase the utilization of its infrastructure for transit, enabling, in this way, the reduction of the transportation tariff
- The project can enable the development of the gas infrastructure in Kosovo*

-IFI Coordination Office prepared ToR for preparation of Feasibility Study and ESIA scoping in 2020The former Ministry of Economic Development, now Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Kosovo and the Ministry of Economy of North Macedonia, in February 2019 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purpose of intensifying the cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. Pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding, at the beginning of 2019, a joint application was submitted to WBIF with North Macedonia, the latter in the role of the project promoter, for financial support in the form of a grant to carry out a joint feasibility study for the Northern Macedonia - Kosovo Gas Interconnector. Based on the information received, the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) Steering Committee has approved a 0.65 million Euro grant. The financial institution is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)/WBIF. The terms of reference have been completed and the inception report has been submitted. The process is now in the phase of analyzing and consultation for the draft demand and supply assessment report.
