Short description of the overall project

One-fifth of Montenegro’s GDP is delivered by travel & tourism. The almost 300 kms of coast with the 73 km of beach in 11 coastal cities, the breath taking mountains with many crystal clear creeks and the exceptional level of kindness and hospitality of the local people attract millions of tourists year over year. The country is poor in mineral resources, but quite rich in karst water springs, making water an important export product, mainly to the desert countries in the Middle East. Both tourism and water export are endangered by insufficient waste management and the country’s only lignite power plant in Pljevlja.

This feasibility study addresses both challenges: using waste as fuel for the power plant could deliver measurable benefits in the landfills as well as in the CO2 and slurry emission of the power plant. With the local partner – CETI – current landfills will be evaluated, quantifying the possible amount of waste to be utilized. Waste production will be evaluated based on potential to be sorted and shredded for secondary raw material. Based on these measures the amount of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) and SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel) can be estimated. SRF is a high-quality alternative to fossil fuels to be used in the powerplant after the furnaces are modified.

The study aims to show efficiency calculations for waste management, the achievable reduction of CO2 emission and the dangerous slurry and sludge (the ash and the carbon deposit mixed with water). The economic analysis covers a basic ROI calculation of the whole project.
