Germany pledges EUR 77.6 million to Ukraine Energy Support Fund as country marks 1,000 days of invasion
The Ukraine Energy Support Fund has received a new grant of EUR 77.6 million from KfW on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
The donation, coinciding with Ukraine marking 1,000 days of Russian invasion, highlights Germany’s ongoing commitment to repairing and strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure, which has endured severe damage amid relentless aggression.
This latest contribution will enable the Fund to invest in more key spare parts and other needed equipment for companies from the energy sector affected by the war, including renewable energy generation capacity; 30% of the additional fund are dedicated to advancing clean energy solutions.
Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck: "Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure continues to be the target of massive Russian air strikes. A collapse of the energy supply during the third winter of war would have catastrophic consequences for the Ukrainian economy and population. Our support for Ukraine is therefore more important than ever. With our new contribution to the Energy Community's Ukraine Energy Support Fund, we are bolstering Ukraine's energy supply, in order to secure the Ukrainian people’s access to electricity and heat.”
Artur Lorkowski, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, added from Vienna: "As Ukraine recently marked 1,000 days of relentless attacks that have severely damaged its energy infrastructure, we are deeply grateful for Germany’s support, which strengthens decentralisation and energy security, driving sustainable solutions while addressing urgent repairs.”
Since its establishment in 2022, Germany’s total contributions combining funds from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action as well as the German Federal Foreign Office amount to EUR 387,2 million , making it the largest single donor. With this latest donation, total pledges to the Fund have reached EUR 894 million.
Administered by the Secretariat in close partnership with Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, the Ukraine Energy Support Fund has become the most effective mechanism for channelling international support to Ukraine’s energy sector. The Fund ensures efficient coordination and resource allocation to repair infrastructure, bolster winter preparedness, and advance long-term energy resilience during Ukraine’s most challenging times.
