ACER's 2024 Market Monitoring Report highlights progress and challenges in Energy Community integration
The 2024 Market Monitoring Report from the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) features an overview of the Energy Community’s wholesale electricity markets development since 2023 and highlights commitment to integration with the EU landscape.
The Report is an annual publication that analyses the functioning and performance of energy markets in the EU and neighbouring regions. It assesses progress toward a well-integrated, competitive, and efficient energy market, highlighting areas where improvements are needed.
The inclusion is the result of the collaboration with the Energy Community Regulatory Board's Electricity Working Group.
As Olena Antonova, ECRB Electricity Expert, explains, “For the first time, ACER’s annual report includes an overview of Energy Community wholesale electricity markets, aligned with the formats used for EU markets. This showcases our efforts to advance market integration with the EU.”
The report highlights key developments, including price convergence between the Energy Community and EU markets, the dynamics of cross-border congestion, and the role of cross-border trade in boosting economic welfare.
The report also focuses on Ukraine, where challenges in the electricity system are exacerbated by ongoing Russian attacks on infrastructure. It underscores the urgent need for increased cross-border capacity with the EU, aligning with the Energy Community Secretariat's ongoing call to enhance electricity imports to Ukraine.
