Ukraine Energy Support Fund enhances energy security through renewables
Renewable energy plays a pivotal role in Ukraine's recovery plan as outlined in the country's Energy Strategy. The ongoing conflict has not only accelerated the green transition across the region but has also catalysed Ukraine's most significant climate journey.
A total of €31 million in grants has been allocated to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund to implement decentralised renewable energy projects, supporting Ukraine’s mission to enhance energy security. These projects focus on implementing decentralised solar systems with integrated battery storage for social infrastructure, particularly hospitals, across Ukraine.
These projects are vital for ensuring a more resilient and secure energy supply by reducing dependence on grid electricity and enhancing resilience through backup energy storage. The Secretariat cooperates closely with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine to implement these projects. The Secretariat has recently appointed a Project Manager to manage and oversee the deployment of these projects.
This coordinated effort not only aims to restore power but also fosters a sustainable, resilient energy landscape in Ukraine. Through these decentralised renewable energy projects, the Ukraine Energy Support Fund embodies international solidarity, driving the country toward a greener, more self-sufficient future amidst adversity.
In response to Russian attacks on Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, the Fund was established, with ongoing donations currently at €503 million. The Fund, a collaboration between the European Commission and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, enables financial contributions from governments, international financial institutions, and corporate donors.
Managed by the Energy Community Secretariat based in Vienna, Austria, the Fund serves as a vital conduit for restoring and sustaining Ukraine’s energy sector, welcoming further donations.
