Winter is coming: Reviewing Ukrainian gas storage and transmission systems under stress scenarios
Together with the international partners, USAID, European Commission and the Ukrainian stakeholders, the Secretariat was coordinating an independent technical review of the reliability of Ukrainian gas storage and transmission systems under certain stress scenarios for the next winter season. The purpose of the project was to focus on the robustness of that system to deliver gas stored in Ukraine by foreign operators under severe weather, technical and military conditions. The results of the independent study confirmed the conclusions from the meeting organized by the Secretariat with the Ukrainian companies on 14 June 2023 in Vienna, that it is possible to evacuate the amount of gas that is expected to be stored in Ukrtransgaz gas storage facilities in customs warehouse mode from Ukraine to the EU under the stress-test scenarios.
Director Lorkowski said: “This exercise reassured us of the reliability of the Ukrainian system under several stress test scenarios. The technical robustness of its system is a token for the security of supply of both the EU and the Energy Community. I invite Ukrainian partners to continue deepen their derisking efforts by for storing gas and improving Ukraine’s regulatory framework in line with Secretariat’s recommendations.”
