Secretariat to strengthen support for energy reforms in Georgia
On 24 February 2023 Director Lorkowski held meetings with key energy stakeholders and government representatives during his visit to Tbilisi. Addressing the state of energy and climate reforms in Georgia, the Director met Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili. He also took part to a high-level roundtable with First Deputy Minister Romeo Mikautadze, and six director generals representing GNERC, GSE, GGTC, GOGC, ESCO and GENEX. He additionally met with the representatives of the Parliament of Georgia, including H.E. Pawel Herczynski, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.
Reiterating on the key priorities of the Energy Community, Director Lorkowski stressed the need to reform energy markets. 'Having put the recent market price turbulence behind, Georgia should adhere to its commitments, make use of the EU best practice and avoid further delays in market opening. All the efforts should be put on the completion of unbundling and certification of Georgia's electricity and gas transmissions system operators (TSOs) and the launching of a day-ahead, intraday and balancing market to provide a necessary environment for the new investments into the renewable energy sources’, he stated.
To strengthen its support for Georgia, the Secretariat welcomes Ms. Salome Janelidze who joined the team as from 1 March 2023 in the capacity of senior energy expert in Tbilisi office. The Secretariat will also assist the Ministry in improving the coordination of donor assistance in energy and climate field in Georgia.
