Secretariat joins dialogue on raising climate ambitions ahead of UN climate change conference

7 May 2021

Yesterday, the Secretariat teamed up with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UK COP 26 Presidency to encourage governments to raise their climate action ambitions ahead of the next UN climate change conference (COP 26) in Glasgow in November 2021. The conference, hosted by IRENA, explored the key drivers behind enhancing national climate pledges through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC2) under the Paris Agreement as well as the challenges and opportunities posed by decarbonising the energy sector.

In his opening remarks, Director Janez Kopač stressed that the ambition level and targets of the NDC2s will have to be harmonized with those reflected in the National Energy and Action Plans. Also, the adoption of national climate laws will play a key role in delivering on climate action pledges. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova and North Macedonia have already submitted their revised NDC2s to the UNFCCC Secretariat.
