Cooperation with WB6 legislators on transboundary river protection and hydropower development takes shape

On today’s World Water Day, the Secretariat replied to the request to improve transboundary water management and environmental assessments of hydropower projects by several parliaments in the Western Balkans.

Following calls from the parliaments of Albania, Kosovo*, Montenegro and North Macedonia, the Secretariat made concrete proposals to legislators today and offered its expertise and resources. This entails facilitating bilateral or regional cooperation to reduce the transboundary impact of hydropower projects, to determine minimum standards of nature protection with regard to hydropower development as well as revising support schemes.

The Secretariat believes that cooperation with Contracting Parties’ legislators will help foster the environmental and climate-related objectives of the Energy Community Treaty.
