2 April 2020

Following a decision by the Emergency Committee in Moldova on 24 March 2020, the ongoing electricity procurement process has been temporarily suspended for three months due to the COVID-19 crisis. The state-owned trader Energocom unilaterally entered into a contract with MGRES (ЗАО «Молдавская ГРЭС), a gas-fired power plant in the Trans-Dniester region.

In a press release published on 30 March, Energocom claims that MGRES is the only energy producer which can fully cover the electricity demand in Moldova, and that the prices offered to the market participants will see a decrease of approximately 9%. The new contract between Energocom and MGRES is valid between 1 April 2020 and 30 June 2020.

The Group of Observers will be closely monitoring the procurement process in the coming months, during and after the COVID-19 crisis.
